For sale is my Doge DAC 7 MkII, from the original and only owner, in genuinely excellent condition – virtually like new, both cosmetically and functionally.
The DAC 7 MkII is a rather special converter for those looking for a digital source with a rich, organic and full-bodied presentation, without sacrificing resolution, dynamics or soundstage.
Its sonic character is dense and harmonically rich, with natural tonal colours and plenty of subtle nuances – quite different from the somewhat dry or analytical presentation of many solid-state DACs. Detail retrieval and spatial reproduction are excellent, with a large, well-defined and three-dimensional soundstage.
Bass performance is another strong point: deep, articulate and very well integrated with the midrange, giving music weight and physical presence – an area where some R2R DACs can occasionally be less convincing.
This is achieved through a carefully balanced design combining a substantial tube analogue stage with 8 × ECC81 tubes or equivalents with the highly regarded 32-bit ESS SABRE ES9018 Reference conversion chip, responsible for digital conversion and high-resolution format handling (DSD).
This particular unit is fitted with a carefully selected NOS tube set including Brimar and Miniwatt valves, a significant upgrade over the standard. This combination further enhances tonal richness, natural timbre and three-dimensionality.
The DAC also features a good quality headphone output.
The Doge DAC 7 MkII has developed a strong reputation among enthusiasts internationally and those items are relatively uncommon on the European second-hand market, especially the MK2 version.
