Description

FOR SALE: Rey Audio Kinoshita RM-4BC Studio Monitor Speakers (c. 1990) — Ex-Studio Tivoli Ljubljana

A rare opportunity to acquire a pair of Rey Audio Kinoshita RM-4BC large-format professional studio monitors, produced around 1990. These monitors were the main listening system at Studio Tivoli, Ljubljana — one of the oldest and most prestigious recording studio in the former Yugoslavia, founded in 1973 by the legendary engineer and producer Aco Razbornik. Studio Tivoli produced over 500 albums across five decades, with artists including Jose Carreras, Andrea Bocelli, Goran Bregović, Oliver Dragojević, Bajaga, Big Foot Mama, Laibach, ...

The Story Behind These Speakers — "Slovenian Studio Rises From Ashes" (Billboard, October 22, 1994)
In 1993 a catastrophic fire destroyed Studio Tivoli's equipment and master tapes — Aco Razbornik was reportedly one day away from finishing an album when the fire broke out. Refusing to give up, Aco travelled to the APRS exhibition in London in June 1994 to ask the international audio community for help.

What followed was an unprecedented act of industry solidarity. Robin Hilton (Hilton Sound) introduced him to Chris Stone, chairman of the World Studio Group and founder of the legendary Record Plant in New York. Stone — who had survived his own studio fire in 1977 — rallied the WSG network:

- Tom Hidley (the most celebrated studio acoustic designer of the era) designed the new main control room
- Chris Stone personally donated monitor cabinets from his own Record Plant
- Martin Benge (EMI Music Studios UK) sold Aco an SSL console from EMI's Townhouse studio at reduced cost — the first SSL desk ever installed in Slovenia
- Shozo Kinoshita himself, working with Hidley, granted Aco a personal discount on the brackets and crossovers for these very speaker cabinets
- Pioneer supplied speaker components at wholesale; Swissair flew the entire equipment freight for a token fee

When the rebuilt studio reopened in late 1994, Studio Tivoli became a member of the World Studio Group — the only WSG facility in Eastern Europe at the time, listed in the 1995 WSG Directory alongside Abbey Road, Air, Ocean Way and the Record Plant.

These RM-4BC monitors are a direct, personal artifact of Shozo Kinoshita's hand and of one of the most remarkable rebuilding stories in modern recording history. The RM series uses Pioneer Exclusive TAD (2401/2402) transducers in massive horn-loaded cabinets with precision 2nd-order crossovers.

Rey Audio was founded in 1984 by Shozo Kinoshita. His design philosophy — "Sound should be as dynamic and uncompressed as life itself" — produced some of the most revered studio monitors ever made.

Why selling?
These monitors are being offered following the passing of Aco Razbornik, the studio's founder and one of the most important figures in Slovenian and Yugoslav recording history. They deserve a new home with an owner who will appreciate their unique heritage.
