Beschreibung
This is not only a classic tonearm but still regarded as one of the best ever made.
The arm is considered as a ‘’heavy gun’’ but the effective mass is also dependant from the used headshell . Ikeda san used the best available bearings for this model which is one of the reasons for its excellent performance. However (hardened) steel is more difficult to process than aluminium. The same reason for SME to change from steel to aluminium.
So after 1984 the FR -64FX ,aluminium production model was started as ‘’affordable version’’.
I want dwell further about the quality of this tonearm but let the pictures ‘speak’ for them self. Just some remarks about this sample. There are two versions of FR-64 S ‘’S’’ means steel but there is also different wire inside : copper and silver. This one is SILVER as well the included extra phono cable(350€; ''tricable truecolor) . The original phono-cable as well headshell are not , so to speak, not at the same ‘’level’’ as the arm. So I included also Clearaudio ‘’STABILTY’’ headshell (340€). Also with silver wire. The other difference include extra counter weights : 170 g and 250 g (200€). The later for carts above 20 g , the first for those bellow 20 g.(the most).
The english say: "the devil is in the details".. All weights are provided with screws with springs on which front side an plastic disc is fastened. The ‘’fastening force’’ is sufficient to keep them in place SO ALL CAN BE MOVED BY HAND. No need for Allen key by each adjustment. Beside hand adjustment is more easy AND exact. This of course does not apply for the shaft which needs more firm fastening.
But those srews as well O rubber ring inside the counter weight are not to find on REPLICA.
Regarding the so called ‘’optimal geometry’’. The geometry as provided by the user manual is not optimal (aka Stevenson) but Bearwald with mounting distance of 231,5 mm and the effective length 246mm for the optimal results across the whole record surface.
