In creating his brand of modular audio electronics, Vinnie Rossi set out to address several challenges frequently faced by audiophiles: the need to continually upgrade one’s system whilst keeping costs down, the issue of interoperability between different modules, the question of cabling, and finally, space. Lio is a single-chassis solution comprising a power supply and, depending on your choice: an integrated amplifier, a valve pre-amp, a phono pre-amp, a DAC, a headphone amplifier… or all of them at once!
The Lio system is based on a proprietary Pre-DC4-EVR power supply designed by Vinnie Rossi, which utilises capacitor filtering to minimise noise. From there, you can add whichever stage or module you wish: a phono pre-amp, a MOSFET amplifier operating in class AB, a 32-bit/384 kHz DAC and DSD 128…
By adding a module, it can be used independently by connecting it to other products, or the necessary stages can be added to form a complete system. It is also possible to replace a module or component with another over time, in order to update certain features without having to change the system
One of Vinnie Rossi’s philosophies is to eliminate all cables, and thus to interconnect the various stages and circuits within the same chassis. Components can be added without soldering or any specialist knowledge of electronics. To do this, simply unscrew the cover, slide it off, and then slot the new stages into place. The finishing elements – namely the chassis, the cover and the control buttons – are also interchangeable, making the product’s appearance just as customisable as its components.
Vinnie Rossi does not merely offer a series of components that slot into one another. Their specifications, and the circuits they incorporate – sometimes using discrete components – are also customisable. For example, it is possible to choose the type of output to be fitted to the headphone amplifier (XLR or jack), to use transistor or valve technology, and/or to add an RCL circuit to the phono pre-amp in order to adjust its input impedance via remote control. Not all of these numerous possibilities are explained in very accessible language, but they allow anyone who takes a little time to look into them to understand the benefits of choosing a particular module and configuring it with one feature or another.
All Vinnie Rossi’s Lio products are hand-built in the United States and come with a 10-year warranty.
