Description
I am selling an exceptional, superb machine designed for a true encounter with music: the Audio Research REF 6 preamplifier. The unit is five years old and has logged 2,600 hours—a moderate amount, given that I use multiple music sources. It is in perfect, 100% pristine condition, both technically and visually!
All vacuum tubes have been replaced with brand-new ones (the old ones are also included). Each tube was carefully matched and measured by a service technician before being installed in the unit—effectively making this a 50% new machine! An invoice for the tubes is available. All photos are of the actual item.
Conclusion from the *Hi-Fi Voice* review:
While the sound as a whole leans toward warmth, this is more than compensated for by its overall drama, richness, energy, and vibrancy. This elegant fullness smooths out any harsh edges, while the unit’s inherent drive and energy propel the sound forward—swiftly, decisively, and with a seamless, fluid continuity. The Audio Research REF 6 is an outstanding preamplifier, though it is clearly aimed at a specific audience. It is striking and unconventional, yet utterly charming. It features a solid—if somewhat traditional—array of connectivity options. Above all, its vacuum tubes truly illuminate every musical experience, transporting you into a realm of gentle tranquility, soft velvet textures, and subtle warmth. Yet, this is balanced by a powerful sound, abundant vitality, drive, and that distinctive, smooth openness characteristic of a signal path driven by vacuum tubes. Audio Research opens the door to a mature level of musicality, revealing the hidden corners of your recordings. It is largely indifferent to whether the source material is poor or top-tier; while it will certainly raise a warning finger at subpar recordings—highlighting their flaws—it skillfully softens the harshest edges and smooths things out. If you are looking for an excellent line-level preamplifier capable of taming overly unforgiving power amplifiers or loudspeakers, the REF 6 PRE is a superb choice. Above all, it achieves the most essential feat: it draws you right into the heart of the music, making everything else fade into the background.
PROS
+ a beautiful, substantial piece of equipment
+ clear, musical presentation
+ very solid dynamics
+ a full-bodied, rich, and vibrant sound
CONS
- it is a rather large, expensive, and specialized product—not for everyone
