Description

The A-3 Core was developed in response to the desire of many music lovers for a separate amplifier stage based on the excellent-sounding and highly acclaimed integrated amplifier, the A3.

The concept remains the same, featuring a robust chassis where the side panels and top plate are "floating"—mechanically decoupled to eliminate vibrations and resonances. The power supply is uncompromising, built according to Soulnote’s unique "Zero Grounding" concept, in which the power supplies are grounded independently of the output stages. This approach eliminates interference and inductance that could otherwise generate high-frequency noise within the amplifier.

Single push-pull output stage

The output stage utilizes a single push-pull SEPP (Single-Ended Push-Pull) circuit featuring TO-3 (metal-can) bipolar transistors—the same type used in the M-3. This contributes to an organic, natural musical reproduction, spanning from ultra-low to ultra-high frequencies. This compelling, visceral musical presentation is the result of a simple push-pull stage, which avoids the issues—such as crosstalk and poor component matching—that can plague output stages employing a large number of transistors. Since the A-3 Core is not designed to be a high-power amplifier, its components have been carefully selected to present the music as authentically as possible, rather than focusing solely on maximizing power output.

Cooling designed around solid copper profiles

A lightweight, compact copper plate serves as the primary heatsink. This heatsink also functions as a busbar, supplying power to the TO3 (metal can-type) transistor; the terminals of the TO3 transistor pass into the busbar, while the transistor itself is mounted directly onto the circuit board beneath it.

This eliminates the need for cables—a common drawback associated with TO3 transistors—and helps overcome instability caused by inductance. Furthermore, the heatsink is not connected to the chassis itself, which eliminates both resonances and vibrations. Additionally, the power supply board and the amplifier board in the A-3 Core are connected via a busbar-style heatsink, which also serves as a structural component to provide stabilization.

An over-engineered power supply in every respect

Two 700VA toroidal transformers are used for the power amplification stages—one for the left channel and one for the right. In addition, three power transformers—including the one for the control system—are housed in a separate enclosure. All of these are mounted vertically, ensuring that their magnetic field lines run parallel to the main circuit board, thereby preventing any adverse impact on sound quality.
