Description

Kanno Works (a highly revered, ultra-rare boutique brand from Japan, legendary among vintage audiophiles alongside Western Electric and Kondo aficionados) designed Moving Coil (MC) step-up transformers (SUTs)—such as the rare Kanno Works CL-3—with regulation impedance matching networks.
Unlike standard, static step-up transformers that pass standard reflected resistance straight back to the cartridge, Kanno Works units feature an internal passive impedance regulation mechanism. This allows the user to carefully control the loading and damping of the fragile Moving Coil signal.
How Kanno's Impedance Regulation Works
When pairing low-output MC cartridges with a Moving Magnet (MM) phono stage via an SUT, two critical factors must be managed: Voltage Gain and Reflected Impedance.
Standard SUTs strictly follow a fixed mathematical law where the load the cartridge "sees" is the phono stage's resistance (usually 47kΩ) divided by the square of the transformer’s turns ratio (47,000 / N²).
Kanno Works bypasses this rigid limitation by integrating an adjustable secondary or primary loading framework:
* Precision Cartridge Damping: MC cartridges have very low internal source impedance (often between 2Ω to 40Ω). Kanno's regulation system ensures you can match the input impedance to safely sit at the optimal 5x to 10x internal cartridge resistance rule. This prevents the high-frequency ringing and harshness common when cartridges are left under-damped.
* Minimizing High-Frequency Loss: By deploying secondary shunt networks or finely-wound taps on their proprietary cores, Kanno keeps the high-frequency phase response highly linear without sacrificing the precious micro-volt signals to standard, noisy resistors.
* Harmonic Integrity: Instead of changing active gain stages, adjusting impedance passively through a Kanno SUT alters the "Q-factor" (damping) of the circuit. This maintains a starkly black background, ultra-low distortion, and highly musical, lifelike dynamic.
